Deuteronomy 23:17 ESV
It might be hard to see at first – however, the dear scribes and Pharisees (ref. Matthew 23:1-3) have passed down an interpretation for this verse which relates to marriage, and goes along the lines of;
As prostitution is deemed a forbidden deed,
‘…there shall be no intercoarse with a woman…without….a deed of marriage and formal declaration of marriage…’
(ref. Sefaria, Mishneh Torah, Negative Commandment 355).
This approach was likley looked upon as a way to assist in minimising/eliminating any occurrence of prostitution in the land of Israel, if it would only be followed diligently.
