This explanation of Holy Scripture aims to show how the precious ‘cornerstone’ that Isaiah 28:16 tells us to believe in for everlasting life without end at resurrection (Isaiah 28:16, 28:18), is the created Lord Jesus Christ (Adonai Yehoshua HaMoshiach) (Ephesians 2:20).
This is done by showing how Habakkuk 2:19 speaks of the devil (satan/Lucifer/Jezebel ref. Isaiah 14:12 KJV, Revelation 2:20, 2:22) as a ‘lifeless/mute stone’ (Habakkuk 2:19 ESV/NIV), after his ‘burial’ (Isaiah 14:20) in the lake that burns with fire forever and ever (ref. Revelation 20:10).
This explanation is relevant, as a popular rebuttal to the interpretation of Isaiah 28:16-22 is that it is speaking of the Torah as what is to be believed in.
Whilst a believer is to uphold the Torah (the Law of Moses ref. Romans 3:31 ESV, Psalm 119:160), this explanation will show Isaiah 28:16-22 to be speaking specifically of the created Christ (Messiah) instead on this occasion, and is therefore useful in confirming his identity from the fuller scope of Holy Scripture.

Isaiah 28:16, 28:18 Speaks Of Messiah (Christ) As A Precious Cornerstone;
‘…a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’
Then your covenant with death will be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol will not stand…’
(Isaiah 28:16, 28:18 ESV)
How Do We Know That Isaiah 28:16, 28:18 Speaks Of Messiah (Christ) As A Precious Cornerstone?
Whilst the verses from Habakkuk and Ezekiel will assist us in seeing that a stone can represent a created being, Ephesians 2:20 is the clearest verse which confirms the ‘cornerstone’ mentioned in Isaiah 28:16, 28:18 – is Messiah (Christ).
‘…Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,’
(Ephesians 2:20 ESV).
Matthew 21:42 Speaks Of The Messiah (Christ) As Being The Cornerstone Of Isaiah 28:16:
Matthew 21:42 speaks of the messiah (Christ) as being the ‘cornerstone’ of Isaiah 28:16;
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “ ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?
Matthew 21:42 NIV
Matthew 21:42 also speaks of the ‘…builders…’ who ‘…rejected…’ the stone (Messiah), and this is also a reference to the same chapter again being Isaiah 28, where in verse 14 and 22, it speaks of ‘scoffers’ – those who did not believe in Christ (Messiah) at that time, and how by not believing their bonds to death (Isaiah 28:18, 28:22) and in turn bonds to wickedness (Isaiah 58:6) are strengthened instead of loosed;
‘…covenant with death…’
(Isaiah 28:18 NIV)
‘…the bonds of wickedness…’
(Isaiah 58:6 ESV)
Habukkak 2:19 Speaks Of The Devil As A Lifeless Stone;
“See, the enemy is puffed up; his desires are not upright— but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness— Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’ Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’ Can it give guidance? It is covered with gold and silver; there is no breath in it.”
Habakkuk 2:4, 2:19 NIV
How Do We Know That Habakkuk 2 Is Speaking Of The Devil As A Lifeless Stone?
Habakkuk 2:4 and 2:5 refer to satan, as it speaks of a puffed up ‘arrogant’ man – just as Isaiah 14:13-14 speaks of the devil as being arrogant;
“Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.
Habakkuk 2:4 ESV
and in Isaiah,
‘You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ But you are brought down to… the far reaches of the pit.
Isaiah 14:13-15 ESV
He would thus be brought down to the deepest [seperate] part of death (sheol), which is known Hades;
Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
Isaiah 14:15 KJV
Of which we also see a hint of in Habakkuk 2:5;
‘…he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied…’
(Habakkuk 2:5 KJV)
[Note: The Hebrew word translated as ‘man’ here ‘gerber’ (Strong’s Hebrew Concordance word number H1397) can also refer to a ‘mighty’ [spirit type being], or even a ‘warrior’ if the root word ‘gabar’.]
The devil (a ‘lifeless stone’) was buried in a ‘burial’ on a ‘sickbed’ (Revelation 2:20 ESV), in the Lake that burns with fire forever (ref. Revelation 20:14) – and is thus unresponsive and immobile.
Ezekiel 28:15 Speaks Of Angellic-Type Beings Described As Firey Stones That Are Associated With Justice/Gaurding;
‘…guardian cherub…. on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked… the midst of the stones of fire.’
(Ezekiel 28:14, 28:16 ESV)
Hoping it is fruitful with you.
May the Holy G-d bless you beyond maximum believing in His risen Son the Lord Jesus Christ (Adonai Yehoshua HaMoshiach). Amen.
