Brief Summary

Here, Acts 19:1-7 will be explained, and other matters such as baptism, outward miracles, and becoming born again will be touched upon.

Begin

In the subject passage, we will see that the disciples mentioned were likely disciples of John the Baptist.

This is said as the apostle Paul had to explain what John the Baptist was preaching on (v.4), in that Messiah (Christ) was actually he who John the Baptist was speaking of.

When the disciples of John the Baptist heard this, they were baptised ‘in the name of the Lord Jesus’ – which means in honor of, and as per his instructions as found in Matthew 28:19-20.

It is true that verse 1 mentions Apollos (a believer who preached the gospel; ref. Acts 18:24, 1 Corinthians 3:5) was there, however the verse simply states he was in Corinth, not Ephesus.

Subject Passage

¹ And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples.
² And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
³ And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”
⁴ And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.”
⁵ On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
⁶ And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.
⁷ There were about twelve men in all.
Acts 19:1‭-‬7 ESV

About Outward Miracles (e.g. Prophecy And Tongues)

For reference, outward miracles such as prophecy and tongues have ceased (ref. Matthew 24:29); ‘…the moon will not give it’s light.’) – however G-d still draws people near to believe in His created, risen Son (John 6:44), and thus causes them to walk in and inturn desire His good commandments and statutes (Ezekiel 36:26-27).

This desire is a sign that a person has been born again (John 3:3, 3:6) no longer seeking and walking in ways that indicate they are a wild olive shoot, but rather have been grafted into that which is cultivated (Romans 11:17) – they are new and being conformed (2 Corinthians 5:17, Romans 8:29).

This ‘born again’ ‘newness’ is essential to, and a part of the new covenant (Jeremiah 31:31, Hebrews 8:8).

The reason for this is that the entire concept of the new covenant is for a person to have a heart for G-d’s commandments – instead of an appetite for, and slavery to sin (ref. Jeremiah 31:32-33, Hebrews 8:9-10).

The new covenant is shared and obtained by way of the gospel, which is everlasting (Revelation 14:6).

What Do We Learn From All This?

Those who believe in Christ manifest outward miracles (these have now ceased according to Matthew 24:29, Mark 13:24), and inturn inevitably display newness in the form of walking in G-d’s ways out of a pure, cleansed heart (Acts 15:8, Ezekiel 36:26-27), and this includes the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), as they overcome slavery to the sinful flesh;

for if you are living in accord with the flesh, you are going to die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Romans 8:13 NASB2020

Now those who belong to Christ Jesus crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let’s follow the Spirit as well.
Galatians 5:24‭-‬25 NASB2020

Hoping it is fruitful with you.

May the holy G-d bless you beyond maximum believing in His risen Son the Lord Jesus Christ (Adonai Yehoshua HaMoshiach). Amen.
