The purpose of this explanation is to show the context of Q5:51 of the Quran – for the sake of clarity on how it is not referring to ‘genuine born again Christians or zealous Jews who do not willfully sin etc.’.
Believing in Christ and observance of the Torah are also promoted, along with a reminder to abstain from any texts that take away from faith in God and Christ, and your observance of the Law of Moses – as if we do not move forward, all we do is go around in a circle.
When Q5:51 says;
‘…Do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies; some of them are allies of one another…’
(Quran 5:51 Clear Quran)
– in context it is actually saying;
‘.. Do not take Christians who are trinitarians (Q5:73), who do not observe the law of Moses (Q5:66) and thus are sinners (Q5:59) – or Jews who do not follow the Torah or Gospel, but sin instead and spread corruption (Q5:64)…’
Here are the proofs, with a quick summary at the end;
‘Had they observed the Torah, and the Gospel… but evil is what many of them are doing.’
(Quran 5:66 Clear Quran)
‘The Jews say, “God’s hand is tied.” It is their hands that are tied, and they are cursed for what they say… they strive to spread corruption on earth. God does not love the corrupters.’
(Quran 5:64 Clear Quran)
‘Had the People of the Scripture believed and been righteous, We would have remitted their sins…’
(Quran 5:65 Clear Quran)
‘Why do the rabbis and the priests not prevent them from speaking sinfully and from consuming forbidden wealth?…’
(Quran 5:63 Clear Quran)
You see many of them competing with one another in sin and hostility, and their consuming of what is illicit. What they have been doing is truly evil.
(Quran 5:62 Clear Quran)
‘“O People of the Scripture!… most of you are sinners?”’
(Quran 5:59 Clear Quran)
The context of Q5:51 is not to be close friends with bad influences – which in this instance are people who call themselves Christians whom are trinitarian and do not observe Torah, and also Jews who do not believe the torah or gospel – but sin.
If any other documentation disagrees with Holy Scripture, takes away from learning and doing God’s good commandments (Rom 7:12), and/or leads you around in circles and philosophy; then it should peacably be deemed excess.
Why? The main goal of the Gospel is to bring people of all nations to God by believing in Christ (Genesis 22:18, Galatians 3:16), repentance, and baptism, with faithful observance of the Law of Moses.
Believers are then known as the ‘Israel’ of God (ref. Galatians 6:15-16).
May the Holy G-d bless you beyond maximum, believing in His risen Son the Lord Jesus Christ (Adonai Yehoshua HaMoshiach). Amen.
