Brief Summary
Showing how Matthew 22:40 is communicating that all the commandments and statutes found in the Law of Moses (Torah), rely and depend on two greatest commandments being observed.
The verse in turn does not abolish the Torah.
Begin
When speaking on the Law of Moses (Torah), Matthew 22:40 can be hard to understand.
What a person needs to keep in mind when reading this verse, is the use of word ‘depend’ (ESV) and/or ‘hangs’ (KJV);
On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 22:40 ESV
This verse is of course speaking of the greatest two commandments in the Law of Moses which are;
‘…You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
(Matthew 22:37 ESV [ref. Deut 6:5])
and,
‘…You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
(Matthew 22:39 ESV [Lev 19:18]).
According to the interlinear text, when it says ‘…depend…’ in Matthew 22:40, this is actually the word number 2910 of the Strong’s Greek Concordance – a word that can also be translated as per it’s legal usages such as ‘hang’ and also ‘suspend’.

The context here when it says ‘hang’, ‘suspend’, is that these two greatest commandments are like the head and the neck of a person. With these two greatest commandments, the rest of the Law of Moses depends, hangs, is even suspended upon them; the other commandments could perhaps be seen as a businessman’s silk neck tie; relying on the two greatest commandments (the head and the neck) – hence, they ‘depend’ on the two big commandments.
Thus the tie does not cease to exist, no not at all, and therefore the Law of Moses has not been abolished or done away with.
The silk neck tie (the other commandments) certainly exist – though, in the correct order; the two biggest commandments have the greatest weight, and the rest are dependant upon a person observing the greatest two.
May the holy G-d bless you; beyond maximum believing in His risen Son the Lord Jesus Christ (Adonai Yehoshua HaMoshiach). Amen.
